UK ID cards - unravelling?

The Times in the UK reports this morning that "the Government's controversial identity card scheme is in jeopardy, with Whitehall officials accusing ministers of ignoring reality. "

Based on leaked emails, the report claims that ministers want the scheme tested and delivered by 2008.

Ministers are now said to be rethinking which, given Government IT propject experience over recent years may be wise.

David Foord, ID card project director at the Office of Government Commerce is quoted as saying "this has all the inauspicious signs of a project continuing to be driven by an arbitrary end date rather than reality. "
